On Saturday, December 4, 2010, the 2nd Annual Gastric Cancer Fund Gala took place at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club in San Mateo California. Building on last year’s successful inaugural event, over 170 attendees enjoyed award-winning wine tasting, exceptional food and good friends. The evening started with a live cooking demonstration from Next Food Network Star celebrity chefs Hans Rueffert and Nathan Lyon and an extensive silent auction including artwork, wines, trips throughout the bay area and Lake Tahoe and much more.
After a fantastic gourmet dinner of grilled flat iron steak and herb crusted salmon, board member Wayne Feinstein reviewed the recent business and organizational progress of the Gastric Cancer Fund. Among other highlights, Mr. Feinstein noted a dedicated $150,000 gift over the next two years to cover the operational costs of the Gastric Cancer Registry. Dr. James Ford next offered a brief progress report on the organization’s research initiatives. In addition to the registry moving into full production in early 2011, Dr. Ford shared some preliminary results from our genomics work, which have proven fascinating. While still in the very early stages of development, the team at Stanford has already found several clear genetic changes of potential significance.
Finally, board member and gastric cancer survivor Hans Rueffert shared his story of living for over five years with gastric cancer and thanked our gastric cancer “family” for their support and commitment to helping defeat this deadly disease. Finally, the event closed with a wildly successful live auction hosted by Ally Nuschy Lenat and had folks enjoying trips to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, Super Bowl XLV in Dallas and an in-home cooking evening with Hans, Nathan and fellow celebrity chef Michael Thomas.
In total, the event exceeded our goals and raised over $80,000 specifically dedicated for gastric cancer research. We would like to give special thanks to our corporate sponsors – Genentech, Yahoo!, Adecco, Capital Guardian Trust and NetApp – who all made significant financial contributions to support this year’s event. Also, we would like to thank wine sponsors Diane and Mark Parnes and the V Foundation Wine Celebration for their generous donations of award-winning wine for the evening. Finally, the night would not have been possible without the time and generosity of special donors and volunteers, most notably event co-chairs Arleen Gallagher and Leslee Feinstein, Ally Nuschy Lenat, David and Susan Grogan, Pat Gallagher, Ross Kemp, Cindy Gallagher and Liane Nicolas.
