Greetings from the Gastric Cancer Fund
Our genomics work continued to be a full time effort and is making great progress. In fact, we’ve already collected enough data in our first year to need to purchase additional storage. GCF has provided additional resources to expand the data storage capacity, and we believe it’s a GREAT sign that the system and our processes are working so well that we are able to collect so much data. Unfortunately, on the personal side, I have experienced a bit of a hiccup on my path to recovery. In December, three years into my remission, two very small cancer nodes were found near my original tumor site. The nodes were very close to my spinal column and causing a great deal of pain. In early April, we were able to get a spinal shot and new chemo regimen that has proven very effective in eliminating the pain and shrinking the cancer. But rest assured, while I was dealing with my health, our board, led by Wayne Feinstein, was moving forward without a hitch on our larger, most strategic decisions. And our project leaders for the Registry and Genomics project were completely unaffected by my absence. Partially due to my current condition, but more a reflection of our growth, the board decided to hire a part time administrative consultant to increase our productivity and better communicate with you, our primary audience. We are extremely lucky to have secured a seasoned non-profit professional, Stacie Hershman. My apologies for the delay in getting out our quarterly newsletter. It hasn’t been due to a lack of activity. Things at the Gastric Cancer Fund continue to move forward at a great pace. In fact, our much anticipated Gastric Cancer Registry is now live and collecting data. Now, it’s our job to get as many patients and support people (for patients not able to or those that have lost their struggle to this terrible disease) to fill the registry with data that researchers can use to help find commonalities and assist in fighting this disease.
